“Walk across
London
and you walk across history - an idea ingeniously explored by Sincera Productions... There is a tingle down the back moment… the sense of the city as a magic place wrapped in the whirligig of time.”

St Andrews
Church
dates back to 900 AD. Its crypt beneath the church, re-fashioned by Christopher Wren in 1690 was only exhumed in 2002. Where they expected to find several hundred bodies they uncovered more than 3000, which has made the crypt a space with extraordinary, almost palpable, atmosphere.
This site-specific promenade performance begins at the end of the crypt's recent excavation in 2002. The head of our exhumation team guides the audience through this starting process as they wander through the multi-chambered crypt beneath St. Andrews church, Holborn. It unsettles, disorientates and fascinates an audience as they discover the forgotten personal stories of those buried within the crypt since 1690: Thomas Chatterton, romantic poet who died of an arsenic overdose at 17 before he could fulfill his potential, later revered by Keats and Coleridge as a tragic young prodigy; Sally Salisbury, celebrated courtesan of the C.18th who famously inspired Hogarth's 'The Harlot's Progress' etchings; Sir Edward Coke, Attorney General who prosecuted the Gunpowder Plot and his notorious wife Lady Hatton of the local legend of Bleeding Heart Yard; and Dr Henry Sacheverell, infamous rector of St Andrews Church; and many more. All the characters were buried in the crypt, or, as research has uncovered, their stories are closely connected to the church and the local area.
“ In unearthing the bodies [of the crypt], they have also unearthed hidden personal stories… they are very good indeed.”- Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

BY PARTIES UNKNOWN The Crypt Project cannot be more ‘site-specific’. Its story cannot be performed elsewhere, cannot be toured, so this truly authentic performance in this space makes for a unique and extraordinary event.
